INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING A VASECTOMY PERFORMED BY DR LARRY BULL
1. Plan to spend a quiet evening at home, reclining in bed or a lounge chair. Minimize activity.2. We recommend routine Panadol or Nurofen post-operative for pain relief.
3. No need for ice packs.
4. On the day after the procedure, you may walk and drive as much as you like, but no sports, yard work, swimming, or heavy lifting. If your job is sedentary (office work or supervisor) you may return to work.
5. You may take a daily shower starting the morning after the procedure. Wear 2 pairs of supportive underwear whenever you are up and around for the next two days and during sports for the next 7 days.
6. Two days after the procedure, you may return to regular activities wearing 2 pairs of supportive underwear. Wait for more strenuous work like heavy gardening, or strenuous sports.
7. You may have sex 7 days after the procedure. It is common to have some blood in the semen for the first few ejaculations. Sometimes blood in the semen occurs every month after vasectomy – no reason for concern. Use other forms of contraception until you are told that your semen is sperm free.
8. Since no incision or stitches inserted, a follow up visit is not required; but if you have undue discomfort or any concern, please call us.
9. It is normal to have some discoloration of the skin around the puncture site. Some men will develop considerable discoloration of the scrotum about 4 days after the vasectomy. Blood from the deep vasecton site comes to the surface as a purplish-blue mark, gets darker and spreads out like an oil slick, then gradually dissipates.
10. Some men (about one in 20) will develop swelling and discomfort on one or both sides, starting anytime from 3 days to 3 months following vasectomy. This usually represents an exaggerated form of the normal inflammatory response necessary for sperm absorption and recycling. It is best managed with a 3-5 day course of regular Ibuprofen or Panadol. Take it until the tenderness subsides, then add a day, but not more than seven days in total.
11. After a minimum of 12 weeks and 20 ejaculations following the vasectomy, you will be required to supply a semen specimen to the Laboratory, then contact Dr Larry Bull for the results. The specimen must be collected between 3 and 7 days following the last ejaculation and it must be delivered to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU COLLECT THE SPECIMEN AND MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THEM ACCURATELY. Continue to use another form of birth control/contraception until you have received a negative sperm result. Your vasectomy is not complete until you have received a negative sperm result and you may still be able to get your partner pregnant. PLEASE NOTE: There will be a fee from the Laboratory for the semen test, a part of which will be claimable from Medicare.
Thank you for placing your confidence in us.
SEMINAL FLUID COLLECTION
It is extremely important for an accurate result that you endeavour to follow these instructions to the best of your ability. Prior to collection you MUST contact your nearest QML Pathology collection centre to arrange the best time and place to deliver the specimen. The specimen must reach the QML Pathology collection centre as soon after the collection as possible (no longer than one hour).FEES: Please note that there is an out of pocket fee for fertility analysis and for post vasectomy analysis.
Obtain a sterile labelled plastic seminal fluid collection container from a QML Pathology collection centre. No other container will suffice.
The specimen must be collected between three and seven days after the last ejaculation (including sexual intercourse, masturbation or 'night loss'). Record the number of days since the last ejaculation in the space provided on the specimen container label.
Empty your bladder, then wash your hands and penis before collection.
Collect the specimen by masturbation, ejaculating directly into the container provided. Under no circumstances use condoms or lubricants of any sort
Intercourse followed by early withdrawal is preferably not used as this results in contamination with female cells and often loss of the richest part of the semen specimen, leading to an inaccurate result.
Screw the lid of the jar on tightly and complete all the details on the label.
Keep the specimen at body temperature (in your pocket close to your body)
Do not refrigerate or allow the specimen temperature to rise above body temperature.
